Vocal fry continues to rear its gravelly voice in today’s society, as discussed on CBS News earlier this month.
Physiologically, vocal fry occurs when the vocal folds vibrate at a fairly relaxed posture with very little airflow and air pressure. It sounds very throaty and gravelly, and has become a more consistent style of speaking for many women these days. Some people think it is an attempt to sound more authoritative, others think it actually reflects disinterest.
At Voicetrainer, we work with people to modify and eliminate this vocal behavior. The vocal fry quality can be distracting to your listeners, interfere with your message, and contribute to vocal fatigue. In voice therapy, one identifies when the vocal fry occurs and incorporates specific techniques to optimize airflow and vocal resonance for normalized vocal physiology. Your voice should sound and feel good to you.
Do you speak with vocal fry? Is it interfering with your vocal endurance or the importance of your message? If so, then contact Voicetrainer LLC at info@voicetrainer.com or 202-580-6646 to schedule an appointment.
