The holiday season has arrived and with it comes parties and speeches. Whether you’re giving a toast at a family gathering or speaking at the office party, there is a good chance you’ll need to have a little something prepared. So, just remember these tips when thinking about your holiday speech.
- Holiday speeches or toasts are meant to be fun - It doesn't matter if you’re with family, friends, or co-workers; it’s still a holiday party! People are there to have a good time, and you should have fun with your speech. You want to keep the mood light and the good times going!
- Personalize your speech - You’re giving a speech to people with whom you share part of your life, not a room full of reporters. Share a warm memory or favorite moment from the year, a group achievement, or something you’re thankful for. People tend to reflect back on their year during the holiday season and a year’s worth of material can make for some spectacular speeches!
- Practice your toast or speech with a friend with whom you feel comfortable - It’s normal to be nervous before a speech, even at a party. Work with a friend or trusted colleague when preparing your speech, and rehearse it in front of them. They can give positive feedback to ensure that you’ll be a party highlight.
- Bite your tongue - This may seem like a funny suggestion, but it helps with dry mouth. Nervousness can cause your mouth to become dry and it’s difficult to drink water while giving your speech. Just bite the tip of your tongue with your back teeth (bite hard) and saliva will flow.
I hope these tips help you when preparing for your holiday parties! Happy holidays to all!
